What an operating partner does that a consultant can't.

April 20265 min read

A consultant studies the practice, writes the recommendations, and leaves. The recommendations are usually good. The execution is usually the problem.

An operating partner does the inverse. They spend less time producing analysis and more time inside the practice, making the change actually happen—sitting with the office manager, refining the workflow on Wednesday, watching it run on Thursday, adjusting it on Friday.

Neither model is universally better. Consultants are excellent for defined, time-boxed problems. Operating partners are the right answer when the work is ongoing—when the practice needs someone accountable to the result, not just the recommendation.
